The year is 1926, and Shanghai hums to the tune of debauchery.
A blood feud between two gangs runs the streets red, leaving the city helpless in the grip of chaos. At the heart of it all is eighteen-year-old Juliette Cai, a former flapper who has returned to assume her role as the proud heir of the Scarlet Gang—a network of criminals far above the law. Their only rivals in power are the White Flowers, who have fought the Scarlets for generations. And behind every move is their heir, Roma Montagov, Juliette’s first love…and first betrayal.
But when gangsters on both sides show signs of instability culminating in clawing their own throats out, the people start to whisper. Of a contagion, a madness. Of a monster in the shadows. As the deaths stack up, Juliette and Roma must set their guns—and grudges—aside and work together, for if they can’t stop this mayhem, then there will be no city left for either to rule.

After seeing These Violent Delights all over booktok, I knew I had to read it, and I’m so glad that I did. I was immediately captivated by the story and the characters seemed to bounce off the pages.
I loved the historical setting of the story, it made the reading experience very atmospheric. I was literally dead to the outside world while I was reading, that was how immersive the book is. The imagery was incredible. It felt like I was actually in the story. I don’t often read fantasy in historical settings but I definitely will be adding some to my tbr!
The romance was chefs kiss the perfect enemies to lovers…and the end absolutely killed me, I was literally screaming at my kindle. I love Roma and Juliette’s witty banter throughout the book. If y’all have any enemies to lovers recommendations for me please pop them in the comments!
The fantastical/magical element of the book I found quite disturbing. As someone who has read a lot of gruesome, gory fantasy this really surprised me. So if you aren’t a huge fan of detailed depictions of gore than I would proceed with caution when reading this book.
I am currently vacationing in Hawaii as I write this and a few nights ago I was walking on the beach late at night in the dark because I had finished dinner at a restaurant on the beach and the shadow of a palm tree on the ground freaked me out because I was still thinking about These Violent Delights lol. I thought it was a monster or something climbing out of the water. 🤣
Overall I would highly recommend this book!! I can’t wait to read the second one.
